water-wise awards
Water-Wise Awards recognize individuals and organizations who demonstrate a commitment to conserving water resources and protecting the environment. Judges look for the use of water thrifty micro-irrigation, hand watering, or properly calibrated irrigation systems that apply no more than ¾ to 1 inch of water per application and comply with local watering restrictions.
The use of native plants, which don’t usually need additional water, and retaining or restoring natural areas for wildlife habitats are also rewarded. Award-winning yards strategically use minimal amounts of grass for pet and play areas and do not have of invasive species like Brazilian pepper, melaleuca, and Chinese tallow. Awards criteria also call for plants that minimize the use of fertilizers and pesticides.
Water-Wise awards are sponsored by Tampa Bay Water, its six member governments of Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties and the cities New Port Richey, St. Petersburg and Tampa, along with the Florida Yards and Neighborhoods program. For an application form, click here.
