lithia hydrogen sulfide removal facility
The Lithia Hydrogen Sulfide Removal Project involves building an ozone treatment facility to remove odor and improve the quality and taste of water withdrawn from the South-Central Hillsborough Regional Wellfield. The facility will remove the high levels of naturally occurring hydrogen sulfide that are found in the groundwater. Hydrogen sulfide has a rotten egg smell, affects the taste of water, is corrosive to metals, and can cause black stains in laundry and can tarnish plumbing fixtures.
Hillsborough County’s current hydrogen sulfide treatment process is more than 20 years old and is nearing the end of its useful life. Tampa Bay Water’s new hydrogen sulfide removal facility will remove odor and improve the quality and taste of water provided to Hillsborough County. Additionally, the new process will eliminate the occasional sulfur smell that emanates from the current facility’s aeration process.
Tampa Bay Water will own and operate the facility, which will be built on an 18.6-acre parcel just west of the County’s Lithia Water Treatment Plant site. Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2012.Lithia Open House Meeting Summary 10/25/10
