groundwater monitoring
Groundwater is an excellent source of drinking water. It is cleaner than many other sources, so it requires little treatment. Our region is fortunate to be located on a prolific underground reservoir, the Floridan Aquifer. However, care must be taken to ensure water withdrawals don’t cause adverse impacts, such as lowered water levels in lakes and wetlands.
Tampa Bay Water is committed to responsible groundwater production. We met our first milestone in 2002 when we reduced groundwater pumping from 11 long-producing wellfields in Pasco, Pinellas and northern Hillsborough counties from 159 million gallons per day (mgd) to below 121 mgd.
The agency met its next goal of reducing annual average production at these wellfields to 90 mgd by the end of 2008.
